Diamonds are a girls best friends...and so are candles...

 

I know, I know...candles are not a beauty item, per se. But you have to admit, nothing can change the feeling of a room like a great candle. The ability to lift moods or make someone relax is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. Women use candles to calm their nerves in the bath, to lessen odors in the kitchen, and set mood lighting. A simple little thing used for centuries, and we still use it today. Something has to be said for the candles ability to maintain through years and years of progress. Besides, in a black out, whats more reliable than a candle??

 

What if a candle can be something more? What if a candle can not only make you relax, but makes you a little more lovely than you already are?

 

A few weeks ago, I was messing around on a website I found on Facebook, sneekpeeq.com. With sneakpeeq.com, you are able to search for niftly items for "living", "style", "beauty", and "inspiration". You can browse dozens of companies running short term sales. The cute part of all of this is that you look at the item and see the retail price, the use one of your twenty "peeqs" to take a look at the discounted offerings on the site. (On TOP of that, they give you "badges" for browsing that offer a wide array of discounts from 10% off to free shipping...YAY!) Well, that diatribe aside, I was browing around and saw something called Diamond Candles. My curiosity was piqued. So I looked and saw that these were 21oz, all natural soy candles, but the beauty part is that part way down this lovely candle is a little ball of golden foil. Within this foil is a lovely surprise...a ring! And not just a ring, but a ring that could be worth up to $5,000!!

 

 

During all this research for information, I stumbled on a Groupon for Diamond Candles. I bought it and decided on which fragrances to buy: Sweety Pea and Lemon Lavender.

When they arrived, I lit the Sweety Pea first. I adored the fragrance. It filled my room and lingered for hours even after the candle was snuffed. Because the candle is 100% soy (USA grown, by the way), I was hoping that I would be able to apply the warmed wax as a lotion, and low and behold I could. Darker wax generally gives you a harder time blending, but this did okay for me, and it was super moisturizing!

After about 10 hours, I was able to see the foil peeking out. About an hour later, I grabbed my tweezers and got ahold of the little packet. I wiped it down with paper towels, then used the tweezers to unwrap my surprise...

I love my ring! And the best part was that it fit!

Revisitng...Hair Crack

Perhaps I was a bit too hasty last time I spoke about this product. Maybe I used it wrong, or was in the wrong frame of mind, but I have decided to revisit Hair Crack, because since I last spoke on the subject, I have been unable to stop using it. It took some tweaking, and and awful lot of patience on my part, but I think I finally figured this stuff out.

Allow me to go over the highlights of what Hair Crack is all about. It is a leave in hair cream, said to be able to tame your tresses from even the driest conditions, including chlorine damage. Call me a skeptic, but I had to try it for myself.  The first few tries, my hair was heavy and unmanagable. It had an odd texture and I couldn't get it to behave the way that I wanted it to. All in all, I was displeased to try a product and spend my own money on it and have this be the result. 

Something told me to keep trying, though...so I did. I fiddled with the amounts I used and finally came up with a way to make it work for me. My chin length hair cannot function with any more than the size of a pencil eraser...or LESS. The results have been amazing. Not only is my hair managable, but its bouncy and full. In these wicked warm and humic southern summer days, I have had tame, frizzless locks. Even at the end of a day of work, or being outside, I have found that my hair is still happy, healthy and full of life!

Not at all what I had originally experienced.

I was very pleased with the results and can now say, with utmost confidence, that I am a Hair Crack addict...through and through!

I'm Alive...I Swear It!!

It's been an awfully long while since I have posted, and I swear that I am not giving up on this site. I did have to slow down for several personal reasons. Mostly it's due to finances...the hubby and I just bought a car, so things are tight, and since I have to purchase my own products to test and review and recommend...it's just a little tough. On top of that, I am also very busy at work. Writing a blog is fantastic amounts of fun, but not getting paid doesn't really take care of the mounds of bills.

I am working on expanding my topics a little bit though. Instead of just personal beauty product, I want to try and focus on things that can create beauty all around us! (ie - green friendly)

On that note, I wanted to talk about a lovely therapist that I work with. She's one of the kindest people I know...and funny as hell.  To top that off, she's incredibly talented. She has her own line of lotions and other smelly good stuffage!

A few months ago, she made me a lotion that was Lavender and Mint scented...using essential oils. When I got it, I immediately tried it and couldn't have been happier with the results. It was all that I hope for in a lotion. Its rich and creamy and lord have mercy does it moisturize. Its very important to make sure that you are using a lotion that doesn't have a high alcohol content, it shouldn't even be in the first three ingredients, if it is, the lotion is more likely to dry you out over time. Lotion should quickly absorb into your skin and not leave a greasy film, otherwise it is just sitting on the surface of your skin and not solving any problems.

One of my favorite things about her stuff is that she makes it at home. And believe you me, I am ALL about supporting people that make their own things.

Primed and Ready for Action

Some things should be second nature. If it works for something, likely it'll work for another. When painting a wall, you add a coat of primer. This covers up the flaws in the wall, and makes it so the new paint shines through...that way you don't see what's underneath. So why should your face be any different? As we age, our faces become flawed. The pores enlarge and our skin tone are uneven. Applying a primer to this can help conceal some of natures "facts" about our own skin.

A primer is a thin coat of creme that is applied to help smooth the surfact of your skin, readying it for make up application. A good primer will help reduce the appearance of pores as well as the amount of surface shine on the skin. All you need is a thin layer of primer to get what you need, and an average sized bottle will last a good long while as long as you aren't too liberal with the amount that you use.  Just apply a small amount (likely no bigger than the size of a pea) to your ring finger. (SIDE NOTE: Your ring finger is the weakest finger on your hand, so when you are applying make up to the delicate skin on your face, it will pull far less than your index finger.) Place a tiny bit of the primer on your forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. Blend it with circular motion, working from the center of your face outwards to the hairline and chin bone.

It's important to find a good primer for your skin, and since all skin is different (and all opinions are subjective), allow me to give you a little help!



1 - Too Faced - Primed Poreless

Out of every primer I have ever used, this one seems to call me back regularly. I get a silky finish, even when I don't apply make up over it. It has a consistant coverage and it makes my skin look and feel much younger. it's creamy looking, but it doesn't actually have any pigment in it (even though it really looks like it does). You can find this one at Sephora for around $30.

2 - Bare Minerals - Prime Time

This is a bit more clear/cloudy. It feels a bit more silicone-y when you apply it, but it does offer good coverage. I have found this kind didnt last me as long as the Too Faced, but it does a really great job, especially if you DO use mineral make ups. You cann find this little gem anywhere you by bare Escentuals. Try Ulta, they sell this one for around $23.

3 - Smashbox - Photo Finish

This stuff is pretty cool. Something for every skin type! There are 4 different primers that fall under the umbrella of "Photo Finish". The peach one, or "Blend", help hide dark spots, the green one, or "Adujust", reduces redness, the purple one, or "Balance", helps brighten sallow skin, and the white one, or "Light" gives that silky smooth camera-ready appearance we all want.  By offering so many choices, they are able to cover a wide array of people. Sephora sells all of these choices and the prices range from $17-$49.

Manicure in a Pinch

First, let me just say that I am sorry that I have been so slow in updating. I have been working a lot lately and have found myself too tired to think!! 

Second, on with the show:

As I have said before I have a small obsession with pretty nails. I get my nails done every few weeks (acrylics, not shellac...my natural nail is too damned thin!), and I love to indulge in a cute accent nail. It came down the pike that I couldn't get my nails done for longer than I would have liked. The outgrowth wasn't pretty, and the polish was starting to rub off. I myself couldn't paint my nails for shite and I didn't want to pay for a polish change...what's a girl to do?!

Enter Sally Hansen Salon Effect polish! For under $10, I was able to revitalize my nails and be able to get through the next couple weeks without error.  The nicest part was that it worked on my acrylics just as much as it would on natural nails. They give you a double sided emery board and an orange wood stick just to make it all possible.

They come in strips that you stick to nails that have been roughed up with the emery board.  You find the nail that is the right shape for your cuticle, using either side of the strip. You peel the clear backing, remove the tap, place and press. Make sure you wrap the strip over the free edge of your nail, this will make the manicure last longer. Use the fine side of the emery board to remove excess strip and voila! 

I managed 2 weeks out of the above polish strips before I went back to my nail tech. They still looked so good when I sat with her that the first thing she said when she saw them was "Who did you cheat on me with?!" You can imagine her surprise when I told her that I did them myself in the car while my husband was driving.

So, long story short, if you're anything like me when you are trying to paint your own nails...you know, left hand looks amazing, right hand looks like you set a Labrador with a polish brush in it's mouth on your hand...then this is the best stuff for you. I really liked that I didn't have to add a clear coat and the strips stayed shiny and unblemished for two weeks. It was WAY more than I expected.

Repair Thy Skin

In life, there are few things that can be considered fundamental truths. In my line of work, one thing I can surely depend on is that skin gets older. It starts when we reach twenty, and it's just downhill from there. If we are wise, wiser than I generally give myself credit for, we will take care of the skin we are in. We will wash it with cleanser, not soap, and moisturize with with product that are meant for the skin on our faces.

It's like this: the skin on your body is different than the skin on your face. You face it made of finer, more delicate skin, then say...the skin on your arms and legs. The pores are more easily clogged and it is far easier to cause irreparable damage. If you place sub par products on your skin, just because they are accessible...and *gasp* cheaper, you will not be happy with the end result.

The key is to find out what your problems are, and I don't mean through self-diagnosis. You wouldn't believe the number of people that I speak to that think they have sensitive skin, when they just do not. People need professionals to help figure out the problems. You wouldn't diagnose a sickness on your own, so how can you diagnose a skin problem on your own. There are two ways to get checked out. You can see an aesthetician for a facial and they can give you a pretty decent rundown of what may be up with your skin. If you have more sever issues, a dermatologist is the way to go.

After all you have heard me say, I'm sure you know that I am a believer in "you get what you pay for". Buying skin products at the drug store can be treacherous at best. My newest skin care addiction is Murad. They have a vast variety of products and they all have some amazing things that they do.

Murad is a three part system: 1 - Cleanse/Tone, 2 - Treat/Repair, and 3 - Hydrate/Protect. You can use and layer as many #1 and #2 products as you wish, but you can only use one #2 at a time. They have several different skin care lines, Acne, Anti-Aging Acne, Environmental Shield, Age Reform, Redness Therapy, Vitalic (for skin with less troubles), and Resurgence (for hormonal skin). They also have a line of hybrids and make-up like products and the Murad Man line, with all sorts of man-friendly goodies.

I know I will probably wind up talking about all sorts of different Murad products that I have come to depend on, but for now, I will go with the basic product that I love and adore: cleaner. I used to think that I had sensitive skin, but it turned out to be a gluten allergy. Once I had the redness on my cheeks under control, I was able to try stronger products. this lead me to the Environmental Shield Essential-C Cleanser. Whoa. Just...whoa. I started using this stuff, and I swear that my face started to thank me. My pores reduced in size and I literally got younger looking skin in the first month. All it took was learning to discipline myself to wash my face twice a day. I never questioned washing my face at night. As far as my face goes, I know I wear make up and that clogs pores, on TOP of the fact that free radicals from exhaust fumes and all sorts of other environmental goodies eee fit to attach themselves to my skin. But, I always wondered why you had to wash your face in the morning. It occurred to me, after starting this regimen, that we all sweat when we sleep. Why would I want to start my day with an icky face. Ew. Seriously...ew. It made such a difference when I started using a proper cleanser.

One of my favorite parts about Murad is that you don't need to use much product to go a long way. I've had this cleanser fpr three months and I still have at least a months supply left. The products are kind of pricey, but they use higher quality ingredients, and you're technically buying at least a 3 months supply, so it works out. If you buy this on the Murad website, you can get the full sized cleanser for $35. They also sell kits that have a 1-month supply of several products in one box for a little more than the cost of the full sized cleanser. I can't say enough how much I love their products. I was never a believer in higher priced skin care before I started using this line, but I am most assuredly reformed now!

Curly Girls Need Love Too!

It's a sad fact that curly hair is often unruly, frizzy, and just general unmanageable. However, with a little bit of help, you can have beautiful, soft, smooth, bouncy girls that most women would swoon over...all it takes is a little bit of knowledge!  Lets start with the facts:

• Curly hair is often frizzy, and easily effected by mother nature and her temper tantrums
• Curly hair is drier than straight hair
• Curly hair is temperamental
• With the right information, all of these facts can be fought!

Because curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair, it often makes it harder to handle. To understand why, let me explain the way the different hair shafts look. Prepare for a bit of SCIENCE!!!

The first picture is of straight hair, the last is of curly. Because of the way the hair grows, straight hair has an easier time of distributing sebum (oil) from root to tip. The shape of curly hair, and even wavy hair, makes it harder for it to travel. Think of it this way, it's easier for oil to go in a straight line, rather than down a corkscrew. Due to this, the ends of the hair are drier and more brittle. No nutrients from your scalp make for sad hair :( ! It comes down to the way the individual hair shaft is shaped:

There is no tricking nature. Even with a flat iron, you can't change the shape of your hair, which is why even a little bit of sweat of the back of your neck can cause the hair there to go POOF!

So rather than fight nature, work with it.  There are plenty of ways to get soft, touchable curls. trust me, lovelies, I myself have unruly hair, so with years of playing with it...along with an ample amount of education...I can help.

Rule #1 - Fight the urge to wash your hair everyday (this is true for all hair type, but more so for curly hair). Now I don't mean don't get it wet. By all means, douse those curls. Water and some conditioner will help them spring back to life. When I am consistently wearing my hair curly, I wash my hair 2x a week...tops. I do condition everyday, though. What you need is a thick, rich, moisturizing conditioner. Apply it about an inch away from your scalp (this will keep your scalp from getting too oily between washes and will help the ends of your curls get the moisture and nourishment that they so badly need). You also want to make sure that you are deep conditioning your hair once a week. When you do wash your hair, avoid clear shampoos, as they are harsher and will dry the hair out. Stick with thick, creamy shampoos for better results...sulfate free is even better if you can swing it. Using a few drops of virgin coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil and aloe vera once a week can be the exact thing thirsty locks need!

Rule #2 - Heat styling = BAD! Because the hair is already drier, adding heat into the mix can make a difficult problem even worse. When you aren't able to resist the urge to heat style, make sure you are taking every precaution to protect your curls. Use a styling serum. Just a couple of drops can help protect the hair from heat. If you are using a blow dryer, make certain that there is a diffuser on it. the direct air flow can cause some serious damage and can even make the hair frizzy and full of fly aways. When using the diffuser, the key is to place the dryer under your hair, cupping your hair in your free hand and encouraging it upwards...never scrunching. You just want to make the curls form neatly, not force them. If you are headed for a straight look with your trusty flat iron...moisturize. The flat iron, tempting as it may be, is awful for your hair if you don't protect it.

Rule #3 - Products made for curly hair are your best friend! Products that promote curling and contain little to no alcohol are the best thing for delicate hair. the hardest thing to do is to not fuss too much with your hair during the day. The more you play, the more is causes the product to break down and the more likely you are to make your hair frizzy and unruly. If you must adjust your hair, use a pick, not a hair brush. I know it sounds fabulously 80s, but it is the biggest benefit for your hair. And for the record, salt sprays are great for defining curls!

Rule #4 -  Get a hair cut, at least four times a year, more if you color treat your hair. Because of the delicate nature of your hair, keeping those split ends at a minimum is a wonderful thing. I know everyone is heard it before, but it still rings true...trimming your hair promotes growth. (See this article from earlier this week for why.) Making sure you have a stylist that knows a thing or two about curly hair is a major help as well. You never, under any circumstances, want to razor cut your hair. Razor cutting can cause more split ends than it fixes, and while texture is something that straight hair can really need, we curly girls don't really need help in that department!

It's a lot to take in, I know, but once you learn how to be the master of your own 'do, you can be unstoppable!

Hair Crack?!

OK, so I know what you're thinking...well, maybe not, but I sure know what I thought when I saw this! Someone actually MADE hair crack?! That's a total rip on Beauty Shop (if you haven't seen it, it stars Queen Latifah, Alicia Silverstone, Della Reese, Mena Suvari, Andie MacDowell, Alfre Woodward, and Kevin Bacon...totally amused me). Queen Latifah's character came up with a concoction that she called "Hair Crack", and it was supposed to tame the most unruly hair. A friend of mine brought this product to my attention a week or so ago, so I went on the hunt for information and possibly to buy this glorious product. My friend told me that it tamed her hair and made it totally manageable. How can I resist a product like that?!

ProLocks provides several claims for Crack:
• Lightweight, super moisturizing hair fix
• Smooths split ends
• Protects from UVA/UVB rays and chlorine
• Provides barrier from heat and thermal styling
• Adds shine and slip without making hair greasy
• Keeps hair healthy and polished all day

The more I heard, the more I had to try. First hiccup: ProLocks doesn't sell this product, or anything for that matter, on their website. Sad day. Marching forward! I started looking all over the internet for the best deal, when I stumbled upon bigdaddybeauty.com, where they were selling ProLocks Crack for $12.99, about $2 less than anywhere else that I had seen. (They also sell Earthly Body Marrakesh X...see this article from earlier this week). So a couple days after I order it, it get here, and the box not only had my Crack, but several samples!! Loved it!

I read the directions and tried my Crack the next morning. When you use it, all you have to do is use your regular shampoo and wash your hair as normal. From there you towel dry after your shower and place a small amount of Crack into your hair, working it in from tip to root and comb it through. I did just as it said, not adding any of my tertiary products. After blow drying and flat ironing, I was pleased with the result, though I wasn't jazzed about the film it left on my hair. It did seem to help my hair resist the urge to humitidy-poof, so I was very happy about that.

Day two, I decided I add in my usual styling products into the mix. I was horribly displeased with what happened. To my dismay, my bangs were dried out and crinkling by the end of the day, I even had several pieces break off. Not what I expected at all. Infact, it was so bad, that come the next day, I couldn't stand the idea of my hair feeling filmy and dried out again, that I opted to skip the treatment and go back to my conditioner, which, by the way, cured what ailed my sad, sad, hair.

All said and done, I didn't feel like it gave me the results I was hoping for, especially with all of the internet hype. 4/10 stars for my final review. Good enough for one day, but I won't be doubling up on this again.

Bring on the Rain...Well...Moisture

As promised, I wanted to impart a little bit of knowledge regarding placing moisture back into the hair.  Too often, we let the environment get the better of our locks, causing  dry and brittle hair. This is even MORE true in the summer months. With outdoor games, time spent by the pool, and days at the beach, there is always something beating our hair up. Well no more! Lets combat this problem to the best of our abilities!

The most typical summer hair woe is chlorine damage. While chlorinated pools are great for relaxing and cooling off on hot summer days, short of putting a swim cap (ew) on, there isn't much people think of. This summer, when you are packing your cooler for the water park, or even just chilling by your own pool, bring on the leave in conditioning spray.  Ever since I was 15, I have been loading on the leave in before hopping in the pool. Back then, I used to use Pantene's leave in from the classic line, but judging by their website, this doesn't seem to exist anymore. Sadness! Upon a bit more digging, I did discover the Aqua Light Weightless Conditioning Shake.

I ran to the store and checked the ingredients, and this will definitely do the trick. Spray it liberally on your hair before going into the pool the first time and it'll provide an excellent coating to help keep your hair silky and smooth. This also works for the ocean by providing a first line of defense against the harsh ocean water. By leaving it in the cooler, it also doubles as a quick cool off when you are in that hot summer heat. A great and inexpensive little trick for everyone that needs it.

But as to anything, the first line of defense begins at home. If you have a great set of foundation products to help lock in that moisture, you will have healthier hair to start with.

Enter the Mac Daddy of all moisturizing shampoos and conditioners...Paul Mitchell Tea Tree - Lavender Mint. I have been using this stuff since it debuted while I was in hair school. I am a sworn believer. Not that I haven't strayed, oh no, believe you me I have. I always get the bug to try new things, but nothing ever makes my hair as silky and manageable as this stuff does. Boasting the lowest pH of any Paul Mitchell cleansing product, this can help to saturate your hair in some serious moisture.

When the shampoo and conditioner seem to need a little help, I like to add a light leave in using my newer favorite hair treatment...Earthly Body's Marrakesh X spray:

Made from Argan Oil, this stuff is great before you blow dry as a detangling spray, and I use it as a light leave in when I need to, even if I am not flat ironing. Argan oil comes from the argan tree (d'uh :) ) of Morocco. Its very nourishing and I love doubling it as a detangler. Since using it, I have found my hair shinier and I definitely noticed that even after harsher treatments (lightening...), it springs back to life quicker.

Give More Protein! ...or Maybe Not

Everywhere you look lately, there is more and more hype about keratin treatments. The concept is simple enough, keratin treatments make your hair healthy. So it stands to reason that more keratin would increase the health of the hair. Like so many things in life, too much is just as bad as not enough. Most people err on the side of treatment when their hair is dry, but truth be told, an overabundance of protein can actually be the cause of brittle hair. With the glut of keratin treatments, its hard to know which is best.

Paul Mitchell's Awapuhi Ginger keratin treatment has a BIG claim, "30 years in the making", but does it live up to the hype? This is generally a salon treatment, but having a license I took it for a test drive at home a couple of times. You wash the hair, then towel blot and add the treatment from the ampule. The solution sits on the hair a few minutes then add a keratin conditioning treatment, followed by a 10 minute trip under the dryer. Rinse the hair then blow dry. I noticed smoother, sleeker hair and dried quicker, but the effects wore off after a couple weeks. I know its pricey in the salon, but if you have the dough and your hair is a lil haggard, I would splurge on it.

All I have to say is...woah. This is a SERIOUS amount of time. This is not a "well, I have some time this morning, let me try this" treatment. You wash and condition the hair as normal then use the smoothing creme. There is a TON of creme and it tells you to use it all. I have super short hair and that was just not plausible. You have to let it sit for at least 20 minutes but up to 45 minutes. I let mine sit for about a half an hour because I have curly hair...but not super curly. The worst part of the first step is how awful it smells. Having worked with perm solution, I can tell you...its pretty spot on. Rinse your hair, then towel blot your hair. Next is the Cuticle Seal Cream. You saturate the hair then use the included comb to have your hair lay flat. This is the part of the process that encourages your hair to lay flat, so be vigilant with this. Rinse your hair and towel blot your hair AGAIN! Last is the leave in conditioner. From there all you have to do "style your hair in a smooth straight style" using a brush. I dried my hair as usual, then finished with the flat iron. My hair was smooth and very well conditioned. As a side note, you don't want to use if your hair is permed or hilighted (rules it out for me from here on). 

Both treatments are great, but I preferred the result from Suave. Normally I am SUPER skeptical about OTC (over the counter) products. Still, provided you don't have a highly damaged hair or scalp, it should be great for you. This IS a CHEMICAL straightener. Suave doesn't call it such, but all ingredients point to that. There isn't anything natural about this, but it is the same as a chemical relaxing treatment. The instructions even tell you not to wash for 48 hours. The commercial can be super deceptive.

But what do you do if protein isn't what your hair needs? MOISTURE! More on THAT later this week!

Take it Off...Take it ALL off

Life has many big challenges: choosing a good college, meeting the right person, figuring out how to style your hair, and learning how to remove all of your freaking eye make up. This has been a battle through the ages, resulting in many a raccoon-faces woman. It seems that no matter how much you wipe and wipe, there is always more residue there. Personally, I have tried countless make up removal products and have been gloriously displeased...I either end up with oily eyelids with cakey mascara, or I go through a dozen cotton balls and see no end to the make up on my eyes. Is there no middle ground?!

Thankfully, I was at the grocery store (Publix for all you Southerners!), and stumbled up a new little gem from Neutrogena. Now, partly because I am infinitely curious and partly because I like to try stuff before most people, I picked it up and brought it home.  I have been using it for about 3 weeks and I love the results...

For too long I have been trying to tame liquid removers only to end up unhappy. With this, its really easy to control how much product you are using. I just place a small, pea sized amount on a cotton ball and gently rub it on my eyes, wiping lightly. Generally, when using 2 sides of a cotton balls, I use only one per eye. It doesn't take much and I have found that my eyelids are not greasy, just well hydrated.

Because of the brand, you can find this just about anywhere that sells Neutrogena. If you haven't seen the friendly blue tube, definitely ask your local retailer about to try and carry some. It retails for $6.99 and is in a 3oz. bottle (which i particularly love because it is airplane-travel friendly).

A Needle Pulling Thread...Without the Needle

I have always been on the lookout for the latest trends, especially ones that make my life easier. Threading is one of my favorite beauty regimens, and has been for some time. A few years ago, when I was living in California, I went to a bridal show. As per usual, there were all kinds of vendors available, but one in particular piqued my interest, it was called Thread and Sugar. I sat and watched as these ladies reshaped peoples eyebrows with just a long piece of cotton thread. It was amazing, with just a few moments, these women that once had unruly eyebrows were now blessed with perfectly arched and shaped creations. I had to try it. I sat down in the chair and waited to see what this new experience was going to be like.

For everyone that hasn't heard of this, Threading is a style of epilation (like waxing, sugaring, and tweezing) that comes from Eastern cultures. It is done by taking 100% cotton thread and holding the end in ones mouth, twisting it (making it look like a cat's cradle) then using the twists to remove unwanted hair. It has been gaining popularity in recent years, with different salons offering it as an add on service and even locations that do threading exclusively. The saddest thing happened when I moved to Nashville, I couldn't find a location to get my eyebrows threaded

Threading had to be one of the most interesting experiences that I have ever had. Some people say that threading really hurts, but I didn't find that. In fact, I found that it hurt me less than waxing. It was quick and precise, two things most people look for when it comes to facial epilation. I am blessed with relatively nice eyebrows. They have a decent arch and only some of the hairs curl. I don't get a unibrow, but still, they lack the precise edge most want in their eyebrows..

Sadly, when I moved to Nashville, no one had so much as heard of threading. I would ask local salons and different suppliers, but the response was always the same: a blank stare, followed by a smile and a subject change. It wasn't until two weeks before my wedding when one of my friends that works at the Opry Mills Mall mentioned a threading place in the mall, that I finally got to have my eyebrows done again. It had been almost a year, and I had resorted to tweezing and waxing, never getting the desired result. Six days before the wedding, I ventured to the newly renovated and now reopened mall to get my face fixed.

To my surprise, the place at Opry Mills was the same place I had been to in Florida: Brow Art 23. Its a relatively simple looking location, light blue paint, three threading stations and several women ready to take care of whatever you needed done. Threading used to only be done for special occations, like when a woman was getting married. Now it is done as woman, and men, want and need.

I walked in, full of smiles and asked for her to "fix this mess" (as I pointed to my eyebrows). She had me sit down as she got to work. Less than 10 minutes later, I was paying and walking out of the door, looking like a brand new woman.

All said and done, after tip, the trip cost me about $15, well worth it if you ask me! If you have a local place, I suggest giving it a go. They do all sorts of services, not just eyebrows...upper lip, chin, side burns, and hair line (the most interesting to me). Prices vary based on location, but typically eyebrows run from $10-15.

Time Heals All Things...Except Split Ends

Hello my lovelies! In the last several months, I have been noticing a trend on the rise, there is constant chatter that there are now miracle "cures" for split ends. Now, I want perfect shiny hair as much as the next girl, but I have to go down to my roots and be skeptical (not that I always was, but with a clear head, I am able to see the bigger picture a little better). Maybe its my schooling, but the last I checked, there was no miracle "cure" for split ends.  So I had to investigate.

Not too long ago, lets say just over a year for arguments sake, I had really superbly messed up hair. I was a victim of hair genocide...and there were no survivors. As a sidebar, for those that are interested, I had shoulder length hair that I had dyed black for nearly a year. I was just trying to get some of the deepness out, so I went to a girl for a consultation to discuss lifting out some of the dye. She and I sat and talked and came up with a plan...lightener and a medium volume developer to bring me up a level [shade] or two. Bueno. But alas, this is not the way this tale went down. No ma'am. Our little free spirited hair stylist decided on lightener, a super high volume developer, and heat. Now, if you don't know hair, this combination, mixed with semi-fine hair can equal disaster...which it did. My hair was melted and breaking off close to the scalp. I was miserable. Fast forward to two years later and I was willing to try anything. I had been through at least 18 stylists, none of which were willing to cut my hair off. So everyday was a styling nightmare. I would spend well over an hour taming my miserably over processed hair. Imagine my surprise when I walked into the grocery store and see:

To anyone in a cosmetology crisis, this is like a bottle of water to some poor sap wandering around the Sahara. All of my good sense and training went right out the window...I was desperate. I bought the bottles and shuffled home with great haste, just thrilled at the prospect of semi-manageable hair. It didn't even take me 10 minutes once I walked in the door to read those bottles and take a shower. As far as I knew, the Nexxus that was among the Pantene and Herbal Essences was just an offshoot, less potent, but just as awesome as the Nexxus my mom used to purchase from the salon in the mid-nineties. I missed the memo about Unilever buying my little gem up in 2005. Oh well, live and learn...but I digress. The bottle made enough sense, wash and rinse with this product for 3 days and you will see improvement in your split ends. I missed a very vital word as I read the label time and again..."bind". No where does this product claim to "repair" split ends. I did my time with this shampoo, washing and conditioning my hair daily until the bottles were near empty. My ends were still fluffy little freaks of nature.  

I knew better, and I was only disappointed that I didn't listen to the advice I was given: the only way to fix a split end is to cut it off.

The alarming part is how many different companies are beginning to make claims of mending, binding, or repairing split ends. The sad part is, all of these words are true. These shampoos, conditioners, serums, cremes, and sprays do everything that they say that are going to, which is nothing that most people expect them to do. You can't fix a split end anymore than you can fix a sheet of paper with tape. You can cover it up, make it look better, but it won't ever be whole again...it will always have a tear in it. Hair is like nylons. Odd comparison, I know, but come with me on this journey. When you get a run in your hose, you try and stop it. You'll place a little bit of clear polish on it and pray that it doesn't inch its way up the legs. A patch job may get you through the day without error, but like it or not, you know that when you get home, those hose are toast. With hair, the analogy is similar, except your not throwing away all of the hair, just the damaged bits. Without a trim, the split runs the risk of worsening. Every blow dry, every pass of the flat iron, every twirl of the curling iron, each dance with hair color all stand to make a small problem worse.

Since my little tango with Nexxus Pro Mend, I have had many people (in my chair and generally in my life) as me about these split end miracle products, and the answer is always the same: Its great as a preventative measure, but you can't fix this problem over the counter. There are always better shampoos and conditioners out there that aren't drug store brands, hell, there are even some drug store brands that will work just fine in a pinch. My advice to you if you have unruly, damaged hair, seek professional help. In other words, your friendly neighborhood stylist can hook you up with locks that are healthy and bouncier than you can even imagine. Like anything in like, there is no "quick fix' for split ends, but with a good cut and the right products for your hair type, you can have killer look at a pretty reasonable price.

Manicures Made Easier

Happy Tuesday my lovelies! I hope your week is going well.  Today, I was thinking about doing a little bit of information on some nail products. If you're anything like me, you may be seriously into nail care. I have a small nail polish habit, I'll admit it...but nothing that needs 12 steps. Lately I have been into magnetic nail polish. These polishes give a really cool 3D effect. Magnetic nail polish used to only be available across the pond, and to get it over here would cost an exorbitant fee. Now, many different companies are making this nail polish available to us here in the good ol' USA!

Out of the ones that I have tried, I prefer Finger Paints. This is the nail polish brand by Sally Beauty Supply. Usually they are on special, and I personally like the color choices better. the only problem is that there is only 1 choice for magnetic pattern. This is easy enough to solve, though. At Sally's they also sell China Glaze Magnetix. In this line, there is a small hand held magnet available that has three different designs on it.

Creating magnetic nail polish designs is easy enough all by yourself. First apply your clear base coat, then follow with one coat of the magnetic polish of your choice. Allow this to dry completely. Next, begin applying your second coat of magnetic polish. As you finish each nail, take the magnet design of your choice and hover it over the nail for 15-20 seconds. When you remove the magnet, your 3D nail art is complete. Once finished, follow with your favorite quick dry clear coat and voila! Kick ass unique manicure all on your own!

When it comes to finishing an at home manicure, the hardest part is waiting. Getting those nails to dry can be hell. I have bumped, rippled and cause "sheet marks" on so many paint jobs, that I can barely stand it. I have found a way to make this so much easier! China Glaze Fast Forward Top Coat followed by OPI Drip Dry

Fast Forward is a super glossy top coat. I love that it comes close to the appearance of a gel coat. I find it stays shinier, longer than other brands. My favorite benefit is actually the smell. This stuff smells nothing like regular nail polish. My sister has always said it smells like gummy bears. I just like that it doesn't smell like crappy nail polish and paint thinners.

Drip Dry is something I carry with my every time I go to get a fill. A couple of drops on each nail after your top coat is applied and you'll be dry before you know it. Its not fool proof, but it does up your chances on having a pretty, long lasting, smudgeless manicure. This stuff is made with jojoba and vitamin E and makes your cuticles happier on top of drying polishes.

Everything here, minus the OPI Drip Dry, can be bought at Sally's. Finger Paints Magnetic Effects polishes retail for $6.99 and come in 4 colors, China Glaze Magnetix Magnet goes for $3.29, and China Glaze Fast Forward Top Coat is $5.99. All prices of polishes are lower if you have a Beauty Club Card. OPI is a little trickier...if you are a license cosmetologist, aesthetician, or nail tech, then you can find OPI products at CosmoProf, otherwise you'll have to check your local retailers.

Modern F...riction

Hello my lovelies! I know I just posted last night, but I decided to give you another taste of some cool stuffage.

I have problems with rough elbows. I lean on my desk at home, I lean on my desk at work, and I lean at the kitchen table...the basic idea is that I put my elbows through hell. A couple years ago, when I was living in Fresno, California, I walked into Origins. It was close to my house and I was bored to tears. I was perusing the shelves when a sweet sales lady came up to me as asked if I had anything I wanted to try. I politely declined and she then asked if there were any issues with my skin that I may want looked at. Now I am a sucker for skin care, and I know I have issues all over. The most pressing one THAT day was the killer elephant elbows that I was rocking. She presented me with a product called Modern Friction.

Origins website ( http://origins.com ) says this about Modern Friction:
"Nature's protocol for age-smoothing exfoliation.
Corn Cob Extract plus body-brightening Scutellaria rapidly help reduce visible evidence of sun exposure, ashiness, crepey skin and uneven patches. Pretty fancy, no? Let me give you the skinny on this stuff.  The directions are simple: ` 1 - Apply this creamy, body-rejuvenating buffing paste liberally to dry skin. Focus on age-prone zones: arms, chest, hands, thighs, shoulders and shins. 2 - Wait a minutes, then massage gently in circular motions. 3 - Hit the shower, massage and rinse.


Its true, this is one creamy product, but its very grainy. The bits of corn cob are responsible for that, and that's great because it helps remove the dead, aging skin. It feels bizarre as you are massaging this on the skin the first time.  There is lots of drag and the corn pieces sort of tickle and sort of scrape.  When you hop in the shower, get only a little water on your skin at first, it causes the cream to foam up. You get some great movement out of it then, and can really start to feel improvement right away. 


Be careful as you rinse this off, though, the corn causes quite a mess. You'll find bits in the shower for days, and it can get stuck under your nails.


What I have learned from this product is that you really don't want to use it more than once a week, It can be harsh on your skin and cause chaffing and rashes. Also, don't ever use is on your face. There are far better facial exfoliators than this one, and Modern Friction is not made for the face anyway.

Well...d'uh...and Serum!!!

This started as the simplest of ideas. No, I take that back...this started as the desire to have something to write about, but no clue what to write about. It hit me tonight while I was in the shower...I was thinking about the shampoo and conditioner that I use and that it would be great if I could get more people to  know that it worked as well as it did, when it hit me...why don't I write what I know? Beauty products! As I stood there washing, rinsing and repeating, I was astounded, albeit disappointed, that I hadn't thought of it before. I walked into our room where I saw my husband sitting and playing a game on the computer when I explained to him that I had wanted to start a blog, but for the longest time didn't know about what. He looked at me, as though he was considering the thought, when I looked up at him from my desk (which is directly in front of his...no really, they are touching front to front) and said, "The answer is right in front of you". He smiled and said "Beauty products". The answer should have been obvious to the both of us, being that I have so many different products, from so many different manufacturers all over my desk, in my bathroom, and even along my dresser top. I get great joy in trying different things and seeing if they do all they claim. Sometimes I am thrilled, sometimes just pleasantly surprised, others I am aghast at the blatant wrongness of a given product. This blog is going to be a way to help save all of you grown up girls the trouble that I go through every time I try something new. Have something you have heard of and wonder if I have tried it? Leave me a message and I will see what I can do! I'm always willing to try new things, and will give each new product a reasonable amount of time to do what it claims.

So lets get down to brass tacks...my favorite beauty product. The one that if I had to take only one bottle of product with me somewhere, it would most likely be this one. My saving grace...

I have wavy hair that is sadly very short right now. The length alone makes it impossible to style. I only wash my hair every other day if I can help it (makes it MUCH easier), generally running a quick flat iron over it to smooth it out. This would be much more work if I hadn't started using Super Skinny by Paul Mitchell. (As a disclaimer, I am a licensed cosmetologist and I went to school at Paul Mitchell the School in Orlando, FL. This in no way means that I ONLY use Paul Mitchell, in fact, I only use three Paul Mitchell products consistently. I just felt that I ought to say this out the gate, to avoid any future confusion. Onward!)

There are two type of Super Skinny, serum and relaxing balm, I use the serum and find that it works best for me. One pump to the palm of your hand, rub it between your hands, then work through your hair from tips to root. The key to this is following with heat styling. The bottle doesn't say as much, but it was something that I picked up from years of using the product. One of my favorite benefits from Super Skinny is that it improves dry time. When my hair is longer, I find that I reduce my average blow dry by at least 7 minutes. This is major. It also improves "slip" causing the hair to move more like what you would see in a Pantene ProV commercial. (See?! It IS achievable...just not with Pantene. Aaaaaaanyway...) Another great side benefit is using a drop on two in the palm of your hand and smoothing it over styled hair. This reduces fly aways and gives incredible shine.

This product comes in three different sizes,  8.5oz, 5.1oz and .85oz (perfect for purses and for fixing fly aways on the go). I typically purchase the largest, as I can get several months from one bottle. The bottle in the picture was purchased towards the end of December and I siphoned some off to give to a friend some when I first bought the bottle. You can get it at many national retailers, including Ulta as well as any Paul Mitchell Focus and Signature salon. 

As an aside, never purchase any professional hair, make up, or skin care product from any where but a licensed salon (Ulta has a salon inside, so they can technically get away with selling both higher end professional products as well as drug store brands). I know we hear this a lot, but I cannot stress it enough. Any products found in grocery stores, drug stores, or larger retailers have been diverted. Its a major problem for the makers of these products. I know it SEEMS like you are getting an incredible deal, but diverted product are usually expired, tampered with (watered down or cut in some way), or sometimes they have even "fallen off of the back of a truck". It sucks for the companies that work at producing higher end products and it can cause harm to your health, skin, or hair.
